Our Keynote Speaker
Deon L. Butler
Deon L. Butler is a former athlete, nationally recognized motivational speaker, and author of The Gift & Curse: One Man's Journey with Dyslexia. He partners with schools, districts, and conferences across the country to advance literacy, strengthen student support systems, and inspire young people to believe in their potential

Background
From an early age, Butler struggled to read, spell, and comprehend. By middle school, he felt isolated and discouraged, often misunderstood by peers and adults. Despite reading at an elementary level, he pushed forward, graduated high school, and earned a full-ride scholarship to Central Michigan University

As he advanced from college to NFL, Butler continued to face academic and professional challenges, including difficulty reading playbooks and being told he would not succeed. Through perseverance, support, and a willingness to confront his learning differences, he completed his degree and earned the opportunity to play for the Detroit Lions.
And now...
Today, Butler uses his lived experiences to help educators, leaders, and families recognize the hidden barriers many students face and the power of early identification, literacy support, and positive relationships. His message resonates with all learners: those with diagnosed or undiagnosed learning differences, those who feel overlooked and those who simply need encouragement and direction.

Whether speaking at a national conference, leading a school-wide assembly, or connecting with a single student, Butler brings honesty, warmth, and a deep belief in every young person. His work equips educators wth insight, empathy, and renewed purpose to help students thrive against all odds.
